Uniflite Conversion

overhead view before construction - open power launch

Moose Island Design was retained to design the conversion of a 50 foot Uniflite Utility Launch for carrying passengers on whale watches and other excursions.  Originally built for the US Navy as a tender for destroyers, bow view open power launch before construction  the launch was open with a center helm.

The new owner's intent was to provide an enclosed wheelhouse with heads, and a comfortable passenger area.  Our work entailed the design of deck structures, complete stability analysis, and compliance with any appropriate rules and agency standards.

This is the nearly completed project. As it sits here in the water, there is still some interior work to be completed. The exterior is finished other than trying to choose the final color scheme. The work was done by the owner and a professional boat builder.

This design was the culmination of the needs of the boat owner/operator in terms of what he wanted the tours to be, the required stability of the boat for safety sake and Coast Guard certification while creating a nice traditional 'boaty' look.

As of June 2006 the vessel "Miss T C" was inspected and certified by the US Coast Guard. The boat is moored in Machias, Maine, and takes passengers on tours of the coastline.
