The Electrical Design Process

Electrical systems complexity  in boats has grown immensely in just the last 15 years. Many times electrical systems are installed poorly, or they are severely undersized or worse, poorly installed and undersized. With all of the electrical and electronic items on-board a vessel today, and people relying on that equipment more than in the past, a properly designed and installed electrical system is a MUST. Your survival could depend on it. At Moose Island Design we will strive to give you the best design for your needs without giving you more than you realistically need. Our designs will always meet or exceed all current ABYC and US Coast Guard standards as well as ABS or other classification societies as required.

The Design Process Procedure

Contact us to discuss your needs and to see if we can accommodate you. Be ready with as much information as possible about the job including any classification society standards required. Information regarding your project schedule will help us decide if we can meet your time needs. We will also discuss any items that are new and/or very specialized that may require Moose Island Design to visit you on site during installation and turn-on. These would be billed separately as needed, if needed.
Once we have all the project information from you and we have discussed the project thoroughly, we will come up with a quote that includes cost and deliverables with an initial  timetable. We will then send these to you for your review.
If you are satisfied with the quote, we will start the job at the set time agreed to by both you and Moose Island Design. If there are questions or concerns with the quote we will  work out any differences until we all agree on the details of the  job and its scope.
The design begins at the agreed time.
When the design is finished and you are satisfied with the design, the design project is finished. Moose Island Design expects at this point to be paid for the finished design. We will be available for questions during the installation process by telephone and e-mail at no additional charge until the electrical installation is finished and working.  Any design changes during the design and installation process will be billed in addition to the cost of the original project unless it is a mistake we made in the original design.

Items we need to quote on a job:

    1. Drawings of the vessel involved; all customer identification labels can be hidden if desired.
    2. Approximate time schedule.
    3. Any known project cost issues that may seriously influence the design itself.
    4. A list of  what electrical equipment will be installed.

Items we need during the design process:

    1. Detailed drawings as required.
    2. A detailed list of any special electrical or electronic equipment.
    3. Your time schedule.
    4. A contact person that Moose Island Design can contact with questions regarding the project.
    5. Anything else you can think of that you think we should know before starting.

What we will provide you:

    1. Clear, CAD generated schematics.
    2. A component list detailing all of the components required to perform the installation.
    3. Installation instructions for special situations.
    4. Any other documentation required as discussed in the initial consultation.
    5. Telephone support during the installation and start-up of the installation.

Our Fees:

Electrical design work done in our office:       $45.00 per hour.
Our on-site costs are:      $45.00 per hour plus travel expenses.
Telephone consultation requiring calculations and/or research unrelated to a specific project:     $30.00 per hour.
